This blog is for the 2009 Youth Conference of the Bonneville Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In their service to local refugees, the youth will be following the admonition of Paul to be "no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God." The purpose of this blog is to allow youth to post the needs of their refugee families, and members of the stake to comment on available resources (items or services).

The Yalecrest service group led by Bishop Smith & Anne Evans-Cazier will be working with the Reh family, a young father and mother and their 5 children ranging in ages from 13 - 2. They have only been in the United States for 3 weeks and are just learning to speak English and all of the other things they will need to know to live here in our community. They are members of a remote hill tribe, the Karenni. They escaped to a refugee camp in Thailand after their village was invaded by the Burmese army and they were forced into camps to do slave labor.
HERE IS WHAT THEY NEED RIGHT NOW (the family would be happy to have donated items if you have them, or the YM and YW will shop for them at the DI and discount retailers if you are willing to make a cash donation):
Food items: 100 lbs of long grain rice, large jugs of vegetable oil for cooking, large bags of potatoes and onions, canned chicken, canned fruit, etc. (to supplement their limited food stamps).
Household items: Large frying pan or wok style pan - could be ones that can be used on the stove or electric, manual can opener, blankets (they have only 2 for the 7 of them, however they are used to sleeping together as a family so they could use large quilts or blankets), clothes hangers (they have never had a closet before!), cutting board, shampoo, dish washing liquid, liquid laundry soap (they have no cash for the laundrymat so they wash their clothing in the bathtub).
Personal items: Diapers for their 2 year old daughter
Clothing for all of the family: please let us know if you have donations in good condition and we will pick them up or you can make a cash donation and we will shop at the DI for them.
*Father: shirts men size M, pants with 32" waist, 36" in length measured along outside of leg from waist to bottom of pant leg (NOT the inseam measurement!).
*Mother: shirts, pants, skirts or dresses women size S or 6 petite
*Son age 13: shirts men size S, pants 30" waist, 34" in length measured along outside of leg from waist to bottom of pant leg (NOT the inseam measurement!).
*Daughter age 10: clothing size 8-10, pants with 25" waist, 29" in length measured along outside of leg from waist to bottom of pant leg (NOT the inseam measurement!).
*Son age 7: clothing size 6-7, pants with 23" waist, 27" in length measured along outside of leg from waist to bottom of pant leg (NOT the inseam measurement!).
*Son age 5: clothing size 4-5, pants with 22" waist, 21" in length measured along outside of leg from waist to bottom of pant leg (NOT the inseam measurement!).
*Daughter age 2: Infant clothing size 24 months
Every family member needs new underclothing and socks. Eventually they will need winter clothing, including boots and coats so we would love to have your donations of clothing in good condition in the appropriate sizes above.
Miscellaneous:
The kids would love to have used bikes to ride. The family would benefit greatly from having a TV and a DVD player which will help them learn English. If they have only a TV, they will need one with a digital converter. If they have any TV and a DVD player, they can watch DVDs without being connected to TV reception.

We have been assigned a single mother from East Africa with 4 children. They are currently residing at the YWCA and are in the process of moving into a house/apartment in the near future. We are hoping to collect furniture for the family since they really have nothing except their clothes. However, it is doubtful that she'll move on or by our service day. Does anyone have available or know of a temporary storage location that we could keep some furniture until the move occurs? We are told by the inner-city missionaries that the family must move out of the YWCA by September/October - so the longest a storage location would be needed is 3 months or less. Also - if anyone has un-needed furniture they want to get rid of, we may have a solution. Thanks for your help.

Bob and Alison Wright
